Tenuta Calimaia

The 2019 climate trend was characterised by a warm winter, which was followed by a cool and rainy spring, especially in the months of April and May; budding was slightly delayed compared to previous seasons. The transition from spring to summer was fairly sudden, with a rather hot June and July. August, on the other hand, did not see excessive temperatures. In September, the temperatures were average, with some rain contained to just a few days. By harvesttime, the grapes were perfectly healthy and ripe.

Wine Variety: 90% Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, and 10% complementary red grape varieties
Maturation: 24 months in oak barrels
Alcohol content: 14%

Vinification and ageing: Once harvested by hand, the grapes were vinified in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature (26 °C), and fermentation took place spontaneously. Maceration on the skins allowed for perfect extraction of the polyphenols, assisted by frequent pumping over in the initial stages of fermentation, délestage in the intermediate stage, and further pumping over in the final stage. The malolactic fermentation was completed in steel before winter. Subsequently, the wine matured in 50 hL oak barrels for 24 months. It then rested in the bottle for some months.
Organoleptic Notes: The 2019 Tenuta Calimaia Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is an intense ruby-red colour. The complex bouquet blends notes of red fruits, especially cherry, sour cherry and black cherry, with hints of aromatic herbs, including sage and lavender. The spicy notes, reminiscent of cocoa beans, are particularly intriguing. At the first sip, it is full-bodied and energetic. Notes of red fruits continue to dominate; the freshness and acidity evoke hints of raspberry and currant. The spicy notes envelop the palate. Good persistence. Young, fresh and silky tannins.

Tenuta Calimaia
This project marks the return of the Frescobaldis to Montepulciano in the name of that exploratory nature which also belonged to Lionardo Di Niccolò Frescobaldi: explorer, writer and merchant, he became mayor of Montepulciano in 1390.
